Deck or Patio? How to choose?
The first thing to consider in choosing between a deck or patio is whether your new outdoor living space is on ground level. If you’re building high off the ground, or on uneven terrain, a deck is the choice.
But, if you’re outdoor living space is relatively level, and at ground level…you have choices.
Decks are great no matter the ground underneath, are very customizable, absorb heat well, so, stay cooler, and as a rule retain a strong return on investment for resale. And, decks need maintenance, don’t last as long as stone pavers, have certain weight restrictions, and can be more expensive to build and maintain than patios.
Patios usually last longer, need less maintenance, require no permits to build, and are usually less costly. That said, patios aren’t for uneven terrain, require more construction, and can be prone to cracks or stains.
The key things to discuss with your Add a Deck Designer when choosing between deck or patio are:
- How much sun exposure your outdoor living space gets
- Your outdoor living needs or interests
- Budget
Often, the best answer is a combination deck and patio. Let your Add a Deck Designer help you see the pros and cons of your choices, then design the one that fits you.
